no matter the size of your horse it will be alot of work, feeding watering and grooming. they will need at least 1/2-1 acre.
and they cost alot of money.
It is quite exspesive to care for any horse period. If you have your own stable that eliminates a fee that runs from like 250-500 dollors a month. then u need to hire a guy to cut the hoofs which is like 150 a visit and then u have the food and bedding and shampoo and snacks and bits and sadled and there is just tons of stuff…id say the total price to care for one is about 2000a month
They eat about a bale of hay a week, a handfull of grain a day, farrier visits once every two months, and worming twice a year or as needed.
Hay- 15 dollars a month
Grain- 10 dollars a month
Worming- 30 dollars a year
Farrier- 35 dollars every 6 to 8 weeks
This is the average cost for my area, but it can vary depending on where you live. Hay here is cheap compared to down south where they are experiencing a drought. This also doesn’t include unforseen vet costs. Its good to have a few hundred in savings just in case….
I can’t imagine why people are saying it costs 1-2 grand a month! 150 bucks for a farrier? Where are these people getting their sources from? Our farrier charges 28 dollars a visit, and that’s to come to us! I only put 35 bucks because I always tip very well. You also don’t even need grain unless you are working your mini or have a pregnant or lactating mare. I just always give it as a special treat.
I have taken care of three mini-horses and a donkey at one time all I did was make sure they had fresh water and enough feed that there was extra at the end of the day then feed them over night. I always fed them twice a day. That way you get to know your animals. I would also brush them every day that way your horse knows that you are gentle, and in turn they like to be with you. You don’t need to buy grain. What I would do is give them your apple cores or crusts of bread or carrots that get soft they loved that.
If your horse gets enough exercise you will not have to trim the hooves. If you have a large enough pasture you will save on feed for the summer or you mow your grass and give the clippings to the horse and you will save money that way.
