  • Learn all you can, books, videos, training seminars, horse keeping manuals with veterinary and health tips– common symptoms of illness. Go to horse shows and talk with exhibitors in the barn while getting ready and in the bleachers when awards are given out. Study the techniques of trainers who are world renown-they all have videos! You will extract a bit here and there from all sources and find what suits you best and brings the best rewards in correct response from your horse. Love and determination to improve yourself in horsemanship and make your horses life the better for your care. Have fun!

  • reward it with grain and oats every once in a while…also carrots and apples

  • Get yourself a Pony Club manual,a good instructor whos willing to share what she knows and is willing to be a point person.Use common sense.Have you made PERSONAL contact with both your vet and farrier? The worst thing in my opinion is to have an emergency come up and hear “And WHO are you again?” on the other end of the phone.
    I wish you luck.

  • Money! Especially for those unexpected vet visits.

  • I always say tht when you need a check list start at the top and work your way down inside and out. So start at the head you need a halter, lead rope, bridle, saddle, saddle pad. Dandy brush, body brush, face and finishing brushes, shedding bar/sweat scraper, Hoof pick, Fly spray, buckets for feed and water, feed pan water trough. That should get you started. But you also need stuff for you pants and boots and helmet. You can always use a spare halter and lead rope incase they break of get lost. Hoof picks always get lost. Blankets, fly sheets etc if you plan to keep them covered. Possible transport helmet and boots for the horse. Polo wraps, trailer, wormer, syringes with and without needles, maybe a couple small jars of baby food applesauce to help medicate. Some bute in case of emergancy’s, treats but some of this stuff you can live without for a while or till needed. Congradulations on the horse

  • For the stabled horse:

    Stable Supplies –

    Feed & Feed Buckets
Water Bucket or large Buckets for water in the stall
    Salt Block
    Bedding for stall
    Manure Scoop Pitch Fork
    Wheelbarrow
Stall Mats (if your stalls have concrete floors)

    Horse Apparel –

    Winter Blankets
    A Streatchy
Fly Sheet & Mask (preferably with neck guard)
    Stable Sheet (lightweight breethable sheet)

    Grooming Kit –

    Body Brush (soft brush)
    Dandy Brush (stiffer brush)
    Hoof Pick
    Face Brush
    Rubber Curry
Metal Curry (for cleaning out brushes)
    Sweat Scraper
    Mane comb

    Tack & Equipment –

    Halter
    Bridle
    Saddle & Pad
Boots or Polo Wraps if your horse needs them
Bat or Spurs depending if your horse needs them
(other riding aids if your horse needs them)
    Chain Shank (if needed)

You’ll need somewhere to turn your horse out at for exersize and graze such as a padock, should be atleast one acre.

    Other –

Fly Repelant (I use equi spot & FlyPel spray)
    Sun Screan (if needed)
    Hoof Ointment
    Horse Shampoo

If your horse has a long tail that drags the ground such as morgans & arabians, you’ll need supplies to wrap it with.

You might want to buy Infusium hair conditioner and use it on your horses mane and tail. We do with our horses.

If your horse is kept out on pasture you’ll need just about all of the above, only you need to make sure he has access to a suitable shelter at all times.

I think I covered the basics, I might have forgotten something though.
