Okay, I admit I am a dressage rider, and am a little OCD, but this is part of my routine when I’m getting ready for a horse show, dressage show or an equestrian demonstration. I use the quiet time while polishing my boots to go over my test and think about my plan… and, boy, do my boots shine!

1. Start with a clean and DRY boot. (Use a salt remover type product, or water, NEVER EVER a SOAP product. SOAP or oiled products will leave a residue and no matter how hard you try, they will never shine!)
2. Only use the old-fashioned boot polish made by KIWI. Use the type that says “PARADE GLOSS”. It has silicone in it shines like crazy and helps shed water.
3. Get some sheet cotton. ONLY COTTON… and wad up a palm size amount in your hand and get it slightly damp with water. Only a few drops of water should come out of your cotton when you start applying the polish.
4. Make sure you polish is warm, or has been sitting in the sun. If it’s raining, or no sun, use a bic lighter to heat the polish for a few seconds.
5. Rub some polish on the damp cotton and rub into your boot. Circles are best for the first few layers. Do NOT apply polish to the inside of the boot!
6. Reapply polish when the cotton looks grey or bluish. Don’t over apply… you are going to put 6 layers on so don’t put it on all at once!
7. Let the boot DRY. Put the boot in the sun in on a heat great, or use a blow dryer. You must not buff the layer until the polish is dry.
8. Buff boot with long, straight, and fast strokes with a soft COTTON cloth or buff brush. Buffing also heats the polish, that’s why you need to do it with elbow grease!
9. Repeat these steps 6 more times, and you will have boots that you can see your smile in … and they won’t be patent leather… just look like it!

What are horseback riding boots? Horseback riding boots are made to be used for horseback riding. Sounds simple enough, but you need to know the different styles. Show jumpers wear this type of boot as well and are traditionally black. These boots are higher on the outside of the knee to protect from injury.

Horseback riding boots known, as “Paddock Boots” are ankle high and primarily used for pleasure riding and every day use. Children for showing horses can also wear these boots. Both paddock boots and field boots have a double layer of leather at the toe of the boot. They have zippers and generally rounder toes and there is still the traditional pull-on style.

Horseback riding boots such as western or cowboy boots have been around forever and still widely used. They are traditionally made of leather but now there are synthetic materials that are worn and can cost thousands of dollars. The quality of leather can vary as well as the hide used. There are western boots made of alligator, snake, ostrich and many other materials as well as the traditional cow hide.

No matter what kind or style riding you might be, doing horseback riding boots can make your ride more comfortable and keep your feet from slipping from the stirrups. In competitive riding, you’ll have to stow your t-shirt and jeans. Western wear is perfectly comfortable for riding. English wear, on the other hand, is make less for comfort than for looks.

If the show you’re riding in asks for hunt seat attire, then you’ll have to wear a riding shirt which is either white or pinstriped. You’ll also need breeches, a hunting cap, dress riding boots and a wool riding jacket. Riding gloves are also customary in these events. Breeches and jacket can be any color which is dark, but you may want to find out what colors are “in” before making an investment in them. Being out of style may not win you favor with the judges or the audience.

You’ll need to dress formal for dressage riding. You’ll need a white shirt, a stock tie (which should be fastened with a horse-themed pin), white or tan breeches, black jacket and dress boots, as well as a helmet or hunt cap. If it is a saddle seat competition, then you’ll want dark jodhpurs, jodhpur boots, a riding derby, a dark jacket and white riding shirt.

Western riders wear different clothes depending on their gender. While men will need Western shirts, ties, belts (leather with silver buckles), felt cowboy hats and riding boots as well as jeans and chaps; women will be attired in Western tuxedo shirts, vest or jacket, bow ties, riding boots, felt hats and of course, jeans and chaps. In more intense sports, the ties and silver belt buckles are not required.

If you have a child who is riding, whether for fun or competitively, they must wear a riding helmet rather than a riding hat or a cowboy hat. Children especially are vulnerable to falls, so make sure that they are always protected.
