How much does it cost to purchase and care for a horse?

Trish the Dish asked:

I have always wanted a horse. I love riding them when I can. Right now I don’t have the means to get one, but I’d like to save some money so someday down the road I can make this a reality for myself.

How much does an average horse cost, and how much does it usually cost to take care of them? I won’t get one until I have some land and a place to keep it, in case that makes a difference in how much it costs.

Any information would be great, thanks!
I’m really looking for some information about how much it would cost on a monthly or yearly basis to care for the horse.

  • In my area shoeing is from 65 to 100 for straight steel, then you need feed which can run from 8.00 dollars a bag and up,wormer is about 20 every 2 months about, then u need tack which is in the 1,000s depending on what u want, hay is about a 100, the list goes on and on.Best thing to do is work hard save your money work at a barn to learn what all you need.

  • The cost of buying can be anything depending on what you are looking for. Some people want someone to look after their horse which would be a good start fro you they advertise as horse to loan or you could advertise horse wanted on loan. The other bills are vets bills always big. Field rent and shoeing which I believe is around £50.00 for a set of shoes and they need to have them seen to about every six weeks. Even if they haven’t worn through them the farrier takes them off to cut the feet back and then puts them on again. It’s his time and expertise that you pay for more than the shoes really. Why don’t you put an ad in a paper and see what replies you get?

  • thousands of dollars a year for food and housing
