How do you prevent a horse from breaking its leg?
A horse in my barn recently broke its leg by kicking a board in the paddock, and had to be put down. How can I prevent this from happening to other horses?
You should always take precautions to keep a horse safe.
Check pasture for holes
Keep areas clean of debris
Keep fences, gates in good repair
However, accidents do happen, and it’s not always unavoidable.
My horse was out in the pasture one day with another horse he frequently went out with. She got excited, kicked out, and shattered his leg. I don’t blame anyone, things happen, and my horses today still go out with other horses.
well its probably impossible. Hot wire helps if thats all u use.
DO NOT USE HOT WIRE! if the horse kicks, he gets electrocuted!
In all honesty, freak accidents happen. Just use common sense. Keep stalls, barns, and pasture free of debris, rotted boards, loose nails, etc etc. Proper upkeep is like 90% of keeping horses safe.
That would be the point of hot wire. I don’t suggest using it in a stall, but what I would do is run a strand about chest height inside the paddock to keep the horse 2-3ft off the fence. Instead of using smooth wire, I’d use the thin polywire.
you cant
Well, that was probably just a freak cause, however heres soem precautions to take
Don’t go in areas that have bunny or gopher holes
Don’t gallop in feilds you’ve never been in
Don’t let fences get below the horses chest
Jsut always be cautious!
We’ve got 5 horses…And we live on top of a mountain (Literally )
No-one has broken anything!
