horse care?
tsafemevas asked:
How hard is it to care for a horse? If you own a horse can you please just walk me through your day, like what time you have to get up to care for the horse and what you have to do? also how much does everything cost?
Thanks!!
and what about a pasture horse? can you ride a pasture horse if it is broke? what is the diference between a stable horse and a pasture horse, someone told me that pasture horses are more happy than stable horses, is that true? any info would be great!
I am asking this question to learn!!
In the winter months hay, some alfalfa, and some oats are the main foods. In the summer they can graze grass if you have enough pasture, other wise you have to continue the other foods. There are vaccinations Sleeping Sickness, Tetnus, West Nile (those are just the basics), ask your vet for vaccinations needed for your area. Worming should be done monthly, but you may be able to do every 3 months. Grooming tack and riding tack (saddle, blanket, bridle, curry comb) are also needed. A farrier may be needed to take care of the hooves. If you don’t have a pasture there are boarding costs. All of these vary depending on where you are. Call around or do some price checking.
Taking care of a horse is not easy work but it is just like taking care of any other pet. I normally get up two hours before school and go out and feed and make sure he has water. While he is eating i brush him off and pet and talk to him. Then i go in side and take a shower and go to school. I repeat this everday. When i get home from school i walk him and ride him for about two hours and i also do this on th weekneds just for a longer period of time.
The cost just depends on what brand of food you buy. and also the type or saddle and other supplies you need. I think in all and all i probably spend about $200 dollars a week
you start in the morning (early if you go to school or work) buy going to the barn and feeding him hay and grain. If he is confined to a stall you need to allow time to clean it before you leave, make sure he has fresh clean water. at night when you come home you need to go back to the barn and if they are confined they need to be took out and exercised (rode, on walker, or turned out for at least an hour) stall cleaned again feed put out water cleaned horse brought back in brushed mane and tail combed and feet picked. at least 3 days a week he needs conditioner on his feet . every 6-8 weeks he needs shoes or feet trimmed. once a year coggins, vaccines hay is about 6.00 small bale 40.00 round roll (this depends on the part of the country you live in) worm him every two months and give him unconditional love at all times. I’m going to stop here I haven’t even touched on the cost of tack trainers or emergency vet calls in the middle of the night. hope this helped some.
Get up at 6, grain/hay/water the horses, go to school, come home, feed horses at 4-5, muck stalls, ride horses, hose off horse/groom, put on horses blanket, put in stall, i go to bed, start over the next day. o, and if its ur first horse, bourd it first.
1.Wake up (5:00 or 7:00)
2.Go to stable feed all the horses=bout 30 minutes
3.Check that all horses are okay=an hour
4.Let horses out for two hours
5.clean stalls=1 to 3 hours
6.bring horses back in get ready for first student=20 minutes
7. 5 hours later feed horses.
8.make sure the horses are okay=hour
9.let horses out for 1 hour
10.bring horses back in make sure everything is okay and go back home
(eat at stable)
A pasture horse is one that lives outside!
A stable horse is one that lives in a stable!NO PASTURE HORSES ARE NOT HAPPIER THAN STABLE HORSES IT DEPENDS ON HOW WELL THEY’RE CARED FOR!
IT IS SUPER HARD TO CARE FOR A HORSE!It cost alot of money don’t get a horse if you have no experience Why are you asking this question?
okay….
if you keep them in a livery yard it’s more expensive mine being 400euro per month but then again really good facilities!
at 8.00 they must be fed(horse mix or whatever)along with hay.
then after breakfast they must be turned out into paddock while you muck out and give them new bedding.
then they must be brought in an hour later.
you will have time to go away and come back again in the evening to feed at about 5.00 again the same as breakfast.
refill the buckets for the next day.
groom horse20- 30mins
ride for an hour or lunge for half hour
then after riding hose down legs and girth area.
then choose from your rugs which one is most suitable for a certain day.
example below are the rugs you need:
lightweight stable rug(spring-summer-early autumn)
heavy stable(late autumn or winter)
lightweight turnout(summer,fine days)
cool rug(after shows,after work)
all the above rugs cost beween 30-120euro
each year the horse will have to get vaccinated costing 50euro ecah time some horses are every 6months it depends really
a horse must get its teeth checked by a vet or an equine dentist costing 150euro
worming every month costing 12.95euro available in tack shops
feed costs 8-22euro per bag depending on what feed!
i would highly recc Bailey’s horse feeds!
then they must have shoes renewed every 6-8weeks
50-60euro depending on shoes
physiotherapy is optional
i get it done once a year costs 40euro per session it loosens out the horses muscles clicks discs back in place etc
good luck i know they do take up your time but its nothing to complain about!!
well i start out everyday before school at 6am i go and feed my horses and turn them out and throw them a bale of hay, after school i spend about 3 hours cleaning the barn, beinging feeding, and cleaning water buckets. i feed the horses around 5 and they stay in at night unless it is spring or summer, than they stay out where they have a run in shelter with heated water. i spend about 325 for boading a month, 75 on food per month my horses get oats, bran, and 14% fat pellets, twice daily. hay is included in my board. on farrier and vet i spend about 1500$ a yr….and i have two so you do the math! my horses are stalled in the winter (i live in maine so we have very nasty nor’easters) and they dont seem to mind at all.
If you are new to horses you can check out this site:
It will give you some information on horse care. there are a lot of other sites out there that can give you information on horse care etc., just look up “horse care” in your search bar.
Horses require daily care. If you are boarding, the stable owners will probably do most of the chores. If you have your own barn, you must do it yourself. The more horses you have, the more work it is. If you are boarding, you will likely only need to ride and check on your horse for a few hours a day. But keep in mind that unexpected things happen (sickness, accidents etc).
A day in my life goes like this:
6am–Get up, feed and check on horses.
6:30am–Let horses out.
7am–Clean barn.
9am–Check on horses and begin lessons/training.
12pm–Feed horses.
5:pm–Bring horses in.
5:30pm–Feed horses.
9pm–Check on horses.
Keep in mind I have a lot of horses. My mother in law has four and she works full time and gets the barn and chores done herself. Don’t forget to scheule time to ride!
The cost of a horse isnt too bad (usually). It’s the upkeep that hurts the pocket book. Prices range from place to place, and that is hard to answer because it’s different if you have your own barn.
Good for you for doing research before getting horses!

My horses are all show horses so they get supplements and extra things that a pasture pet may not need. My horses get 2-3 grooming a day to keep their coats clean and neat. Our 2nd cutting bales cost us $3.50 and our 1st cutting costs $2.50. Our feed ranges any where from 15-20 dollars a bag. We buy special shavings and things like that to keep their stalls neat and clean. Also my horses get specific workouts to condition for show season. Our horses are not top of the line but we do our best to keep them looking that way. A horse is very time consuming but I enjoy it.
